I would suggest at a minimum:

Manual:
Hammer
Screwdriver sets - phillips and standard, various sizes
Pliers
Channel Locks (plumbers pliers)


Power tools:
Power sander
Circular saw
Jig saw


If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

- powerdrill (cordless is really practical)
- level
- tape measure
- utility knife
- string

Don't also forget, chisel for wood carving, shovel for digging. Is there other tips?

If you want to get into outdoor tools, you would definately need:

shovel, rake, hard-headed rake, edger of some sort, hedge trimmer, wood-saw or chain saw if you have a big property.

Thanks for adding onto my list. I'd forgotten some, obviously.

Oh, you might want an allen wrench, hex or star head wrench. Some of the newer screws have heads that aren't your typical straight or philips.

Thanks, everyone. I was trying t make up a list for a young couple I know who just bought their first home. And I kept running into the same thing - I would think of one more thing to add to the list.

But I think between all of us, we have it covered now.

That's a really good idea. I wish someone would have done that for me when we got our first house. I think that a good tool set would be a great idea for a housewarming gift, or a wedding present. That way, they wouldn't have to worry about getting the items together themselves.
