Here is the house we are working on. Son is trying to match this new roof to the old photo (historical records) of this house. Here's how far we've gotten: And then again today: Here's the original photo:
1823 or there abouts. We have photos from 1838 and 1842 that we got from the Historical Society, but the gggrandson of the original owners has stopped by and offered to let son and wife look at the family albums. The photo shown above is from 1842. The outside details are a mixture (to me) of Victorian and Scandinavian. Unbelievably for so old a house, the inside had woodwork that has never been painted, fireplaces that have never been closed up, and it's the only building around with all the original chimneys intact.
That's amazing! I love old buildings and I think it must be an absolutely pleasure to restore one to it's former glory.
The first picture in this thread shows the porch in progress, but the front windows are also shown. Here, the windows are finished with the painting and (hopefully) soon will have siding around them.
I didn't show the finished front door or the painted porch features -- as far as the work as gone. Siding is to be the lighter green seen on the porch skirting.
Beautiful! I can't wait to see what it's going to look like when you guys are finished with this project.
Here's where we are now. Son vowed he'd get the front siding on before winter. See the snow? See the snow fall? Fall, snow, fall. Winter has come early and I'm doubting it's getting any further. See my DSO and my DOG. Enjoy the dog, love the guy!
Took a few shots inside. Not where work is being done, but they show the potential of this old house.
Last report on the project was November of 2014. At last DS is getting back to work on the outside. Now both the lower and upper windows in front are painted and the gables are painted as high as DS can safely reach with our scaffolding. First he wants to roof the eyebrows and then we can get started on the siding. Can you believe that after nearly a year, DIL is questioning whether the colors on the trim are in their proper place? What do you think? Should the center triangle over the windows be orange or green? DIL is thinking green was the original color for there. DS doesn't really care. Wouldn't take long to redo that small section. Once the house is sided all the way around as high as the scaffolding will allow, DS wants to rent a lift and repair, replace, paint all the gable ends at one time and install new gutters. I am hoping photos will soon be coming.
